As we continue to expose the benefits of longer Amber Times (Increased Safety, Decreased Tickets), we continue to be amazed at the resolve of Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz and Councilors such asĀ  Nordman, Sharma, Gerbassi and Vandal to hide their heads in the sand and pretend this data doesn’t exist and that it wouldn’t work here. Instead the only logic they seem to understand is that presented to them by their “Paid Traffic Engineer” who of course is completely unbiased and in fact is quoted as saying in the committee meeting on his report that “Winnipeg does not appear to have a red light running problem”

This was followed by a question from Councilor Vandal asking, “Well why do we have Red Light Cameras Then?” Without skipping a beat the other “Paid Expert” chimed in, that although it would not be considered an epidemic, there are violations occurring and the cameras were brought in as a method of “Behavior Modification” for motorists.

Which leads me to scratch my head and wonder why so many intersections in the City are still generating thousands of tickets every year with no real modification in numbers? Intersections the like of Route 90/Corydon and Grant/Wilton, that are great money makers for the City. Year after year the numbers are consistent at them so there is no behavior change which should make the “Paid Experts” at the City ponder if there may be a better approach because the cameras are obviously not working.

Longer Amber Light Times are once again proving they work everywhere else to improve safety and decrease violations. It’s such a shame that with more and more mounting evidence to this fact that it is still not enough to compel Winnipeg Councilors to explore it’s use.

That’s because elected “leaders” like Dan Vandal, Jenni Gerbassi, Devi Sharma and Grant Nordman would rather fleece the citizens of Winnipeg and the Surrounding Communities to pay ACS their $5 million a year and make a little for themselves, then come up with creative solutions to ending the contract and putting their intellegence to work finding other ways to generate revenue.

Then there’s Lucky Sammy Katz, who twice has had his vehicle slide or go through a red light and has not received a ticket either time. Perhaps if he had an extra second he wouldn’t have caused a collision this last time. However I’m sure they sleep well at night knowing that they have made the intersections “Adequately” Safe. After all why go that little bit extra to prevent more collisions and violations, right?

Officials in Port Lavaca, Texas decided yesterday that they would ignore an initiative petition calling for the 12,000 residents to decide the fate of the red light cameras in a May election (view petition). Signatures on the petition were certified as valid shortly after being submitted in January and a special city council meeting was scheduled to place the measure on the ballot, but the city decided against holding the vote. The group Port Lavaca Citizens Against Red Light Cameras believes the city is violating the law.

“We complied with all requirements of the city charter regarding charter amendments,” initiative organizer Dwayne Buehring told TheNewspaper. “We turned these in three months ago. Apparently, it was an orchestrated effort on their part to put it off until the last minute so we had no recourse to get it on the May ballot.”
